Fellowship Overview
The JSPS International Fellowships for Research 2027 offer fully funded short-term research opportunities for pre-doctoral and postdoctoral researchers, particularly those connected to ASEAN member countries. Fellows conduct research in Japan under the guidance of leading Japanese scholars, strengthening international collaboration and fostering professional development.


Degree Level / Fellowship Duration

  • Fellowship period: 1 to 12 months (continuous stay)

  • Fellows must begin their stay between 1 April and 31 March

  • Awarded in full-month units

Available Subjects

  • All academic and scientific fields are eligible, including:

    • Engineering & Technology

    • Natural & Life Sciences

    • Medical & Health Sciences

    • Social Sciences & Humanities

    • Environmental & Climate Studies

    • Information Technology & Data Science

Benefits

  • Monthly Allowance: 362,000 JPY (PhD holders), 200,000 JPY (Non-PhD holders)

  • Additional Support:

    • Round-trip international airfare (subject to JSPS regulations)

    • Settling-in allowance: 200,000 JPY for fellowships ≥ 3 months

    • Overseas travel insurance

    • Research support allowance: Up to 70,000 JPY/month (applied for by host)

Eligibility Criteria

  • PhD must be obtained outside Japan

  • Applicants must not have previously received a JSPS Postdoctoral Fellowship in related categories

  • Host researchers must be affiliated with KAKENHI-eligible institutions and remain the same throughout the fellowship

  • Non-ASEAN nationals may apply if they have been engaged in ASEAN research institutions for at least three years

Application Procedure

  1. Find a Host Researcher in Japan and secure acceptance

  2. Prepare Required Documents: Academic transcripts, PhD diploma, recommendation letter, host acceptance letter, research plan, publications list, and completed application form

  3. Submit via ASEAN University Network (AUN) online portal

  4. Nomination & Selection: Nominating authorities evaluate applications, selected candidates are nominated to JSPS, results announced by February
