WGA Celebrate the West High School Art Competition

The WGA Celebrate the West Art Competition is a prestigious program recognizing high school students’ artistic talent across the Western United States. Students submit original artwork that reflects their connection to the West, with opportunities for state, regional, and national recognition.

Eligible Participants

• High school students or equivalent homeschool level

• Students attending school in a WGA member state or territory

Participating States & Territories
Alaska, American Samoa, Arizona, California, Colorado, Guam, Hawaii, Idaho, Kansas, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Northern Mariana Islands, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Dakota, Utah, Washington, Wyoming

• Homeschool students in these regions are also eligible

Eligible Subjects / Artwork Requirements

• Original, two-dimensional artwork

• Size: 8”×10” to 24”×36” (unframed)

• Must be created by the student; photography or AI-generated art is not allowed

• Theme: Connected to your state or the West (landscape, culture, history, identity, personal meaning)

Scholarship / Competition Benefits

• State Awards: $200 for state finalists

• Regional Awards:

  • First Place: $1,500

  • Second Place: $750

  • Third Place: $500

  • People’s Choice Award: $250

• Additional Recognition: Chairman’s Award for Outstanding High School Art Educator ($300)

• Opportunities for public display, online recognition, podcast interviews, and features through WGA and partner organizations

Application Procedure

1. Create Your Artwork – Original art representing your state or the West

2. Prepare a High-Quality Photograph – Clear, well-lit image for judging

3. Write an Artist Statement – Explain the meaning, inspiration, and story behind your artwork
