The University of Tokyo is one of the world’s leading universities in research and education. Its Graduate School of Science (GSS) offers the UTRIP Research Internship Program to enhance the school’s international profile and attract outstanding students globally. Established in 2010, UTRIP provides intensive research training for undergraduates aiming for graduate studies.


Course Details:
The UTRIP Research Internship Program is a six-week summer program designed for undergraduate students outside Japan with a strong interest in scientific research. Participants engage in hands-on research under faculty supervision in departments such as Physics, Astronomy, Chemistry, Earth & Planetary Sciences, and Biological Sciences.

The program includes:

  • Intensive research training in natural sciences

  • Participation in laboratory meetings and academic discussions

  • Reading specialized scientific papers

  • Interdisciplinary lectures and workshops

  • A field trip to a historical or natural site in Japan

  • A short course in Japanese language and culture

  • Academic and social activities

  • Submission of an oral presentation and a written research report at the end

Program Benefits:

  • Full-time, research-intensive experience

  • Financial support including:

    • Round-trip airfare

    • Housing for 43 nights

    • Daily stipend based on region:

      • Asia / Eastern Russia / Oceania & Pacific: 140,000 JPY

      • Europe / Western Russia / North America: 160,000 JPY

      • Latin America / Caribbean / Africa / Middle East: 170,000 JPY

  • Certificate of completion for eligible participants

Eligibility:

  • Completed at least one year of undergraduate study

  • Enrolled in a university outside Japan and returning afterward

  • Preferably a 3rd-year student in a 4-year program or 2nd-year in a 3-year program

  • Major in natural sciences or related fields

  • Long-term career plans in scientific fields

  • Commitment to the full six-week program

  • Proof of health insurance

  • Proof of English proficiency (TOEFL/IELTS) or exemption if studied in English for 8 consecutive years

Student Commitments:

  • Dedicate full time to the research project

  • Attend all academic and social activities

  • Submit a final research report within two weeks after program completion
