About SBW Berlin
SBW Berlin is a leading scholarship program supporting talented international students who demonstrate a strong commitment to social engagement. The program enables students to pursue undergraduate or postgraduate studies in Berlin or Potsdam, with full financial and living support, while encouraging them to apply their acquired knowledge to sustainable social projects in their home countries.


Scholarship Objectives
The scholarship is designed for students with proven social or volunteer experience who aim to develop social or charitable projects in their communities. Selection is based on:

  1. Academic and professional competence.

  2. Personal suitability.

  3. Financial need.

All fields of study are eligible, and in special cases, vocational training in Berlin or Potsdam may be funded.

Target Group
The scholarship targets students from developing regions, including Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe, and South America. Students already receiving other scholarships in Germany (except under BAföG adjustments) are ineligible.

Financial Benefits

  • Furnished room in a shared student apartment in Berlin.

  • Monthly living allowance of 480 EUR.

  • Full tuition coverage.

  • Travel allowance (up to 500 EUR within Europe, 1,000 EUR outside Europe).

Duration and Continuity

  • Duration: 30 days to 48 months depending on degree program.

  • Continued eligibility is reviewed each semester based on academic performance and social project progress.

Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must:

  • Be 18–30 years old.

  • Have verified volunteer/professional experience in a non-profit organization.

  • Not have resided in Germany for more than 18 months.

  • Hold a university-qualifying education certificate with a minimum GPA of 2.0 (German system).

  • Demonstrate low household income and commit to returning home or engaging in charitable work post-graduation.

Application Deadlines
Applications are accepted year-round with no fees.

Required Documents

  • Recommendation letter from a social institution.

  • Application form (provided to shortlisted candidates).

  • Description of the social project (2–5 pages).

  • Academic transcripts, diploma, proof of family income.

  • Preferred: university admission letter, language certificate, prior training/employment certificates.

  • Documents in German or English.

Selection Process

  • Initial eligibility screening.

  • Evaluation of academic and financial status.

  • Interview about social project implementation.

Post-Graduation Commitments

  • Return home and develop the social project for 18 months (no repayment).

  • Remain in Germany and repay the scholarship in 12 interest-free installments if applicable.
