The Chateaubriand Fellowship Program 2026–2027 is a prestigious research fellowship offered by the Embassy of France in the United States. It provides PhD students enrolled at U.S. universities the opportunity to conduct 4–9 months of doctoral research in France. Degree Level:

  • PhD (Doctoral-level) students only

Available Subjects:
1. STEM Track – Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Computer Science, Biology & Health, Ecology, Technology, Environmental Sciences.
Special partnership with Université Clermont Auvergne includes research in Climate, Biodiversity, Health, and related fields.

2. Humanities & Social Sciences (HSS Track) – Literature, History, Economics, Law, Anthropology, Sociology, Political Science, Gender Studies, Communication, Philosophy.
Special partnership with Université Clermont Auvergne includes research in democracy, gender, Anthropocene, and socio-economic vulnerability.

Benefits:

  • STEM Fellowship: €1,850 monthly stipend, round-trip airfare support, health insurance, support from French research organizations (Inserm, Inria, CNRS), opportunity to engage in NSF’s GROW partnership

  • HSS Fellowship: €1,704 monthly stipend, round-trip airfare (up to €1,410), health insurance, academic support from Campus France

Eligibility:

  • Currently enrolled in a PhD program at an accredited U.S. university

  • Approval for co-supervision between U.S. and French research advisors

  • Conduct research in a French university, institute, or lab

  • Not a French citizen or dual citizen

  • French language proficiency not required

  • Research Start: September 1, 2026 – April 30, 2027
