About the Program

The Australia Awards Fellowships 2026 (Round 21) are among the most prestigious international development initiatives by the Australian Government. The fellowships enhance global cooperation through joint projects between Australian organizations and Overseas Counterpart Organizations (OCOs), addressing regional and global challenges.


Degree Level

This fellowship is not an academic degree but a short-term professional development opportunity designed for mid-career and senior professionals in government, academia, private sector, or NGOs.


Available Subjects

Applicants should align their proposed projects with one of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) priority areas:

  1. Climate change, adaptation, and green energy transition

  2. Health and public wellbeing

  3. Gender equality, disability inclusion, and social inclusion

  4. Digital economy, cyber resilience, and media engagement

  5. Maritime and blue economy

  6. Infrastructure and connectivity

Applicants must be citizens and residents of eligible developing countries across these regions:

  • Pacific: Fiji, Samoa, Tonga, Papua New Guinea, and others

  • Southeast Asia: Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand, Philippines, etc.

  • South Asia & Middle East: India, Pakistan, Jordan, State of Palestine, etc.

  • Africa: Egypt, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, Morocco, etc.

  • Caribbean: Jamaica, Saint Lucia, Belize, etc.

  • Europe: Ukraine


Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for the fellowship, applicants must:

  • Be at least 18 years old

  • Be a citizen and resident of an eligible developing country

  • Not hold Australian or New Zealand citizenship or residency

  • Apply through an Australian organization in partnership with an Overseas Counterpart Organization (OCO)

  • Be employed in a relevant field

  • Have sufficient English proficiency

  • Be available for the entire fellowship duration (2–52 weeks)

  • Travel without dependents (individual participation only)


Application Procedure

Only Australian organizations can submit applications via the SmartyGrants platform.
Steps include:

  1. Partnership Formation: Australian Host Organization partners with OCO.

  2. Proposal Submission: Application submitted via SmartyGrants.

  3. Evaluation: DFAT reviews based on relevance and feasibility.

  4. Results: Announced from July 2026.

  • Industry Info Session: 10 November 2025 (Online via MS Teams)

  • Applications Close: 16 January 2026 (11:59 pm AEDT)

  • Results Announced: From July 2026

  • Fellowship Period: September 2026 – March 2028

  • Start Date in Australia: 1 January 2027
