Global Development Fellowship 2026 | Fully Funded

About the Fellowship

The Global Development Fellowship 2026 targets PhD students from Least Developed Countries (LDCs) and Lower Middle-Income Countries (LMICs). Selected candidates will participate in short-term research placements at Imperial College London, lasting two to four months, to advance high-impact research in global development.

Funding and Benefits

Fellows will receive:

  • Monthly stipend: £1,900

  • One-time arrival payment: £200

  • Round-trip economy airfare

  • Visa and Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) fees

  • Travel support for visa applications

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must:

  • Be current PhD students

  • Be citizens and permanent residents of LDC or LMIC countries

  • Be enrolled in a university in LDC/LMIC

  • Have completed 12+ months of PhD study by start of fellowship

  • Provide a Letter of Support from an Imperial host supervisor (signed by Head of Department)

  • Provide a Letter of Recommendation from their home institution PhD supervisor

  • Demonstrate strong English proficiency (no formal certificate required)

Ineligible applicants: Dual British citizens, residents of Upper Middle-Income or High-Income Countries, and PhD students currently studying in such countries.

How to Apply

Submit the online application by November 28, 2025, including:

  • Background information demonstrating eligibility

  • Letter of Recommendation from home supervisor

  • Letter of Support from Imperial host supervisor

  • Answers to questions on research summary, fellowship plan, and skill enhancement


Additional Information

  • Fellowship period: March 2026 – July 31, 2026

  • Applicants requiring ATAS certificates should apply early

  • Initial personal funds (~£200) recommended for expenses before reimbursement

Application Review

Applications are reviewed by the Global Development Fellowship Committee. Results will be announced in December 2025, ensuring fair geographical representation among selected fellows.
