The university offers the Special Scholarship Program (SSP) to attract outstanding international doctoral students. Fully Funded PhD Scholarship – Special Scholarship Program (SSP)

Program Overview

  • Degree: Doctorate (3-year program)

  • Faculty: Graduate School of Engineering

  • Language of Instruction: English

  • Enrollment Period: April or October

  • Number of Students per Supervisor: Maximum of three

Scholarship Duration & Benefits

  • Full tuition and fees exemption:

    • Application fee: 15,000 JPY

    • Enrollment fee: 300,000 JPY

    • Annual tuition: 535,800 JPY × 3 years

  • Monthly stipend: 150,000 JPY for living expenses

  • Transition allowance: 150,000 JPY for travel and initial costs

  • Assistance in student housing (International House or Takasone Dormitory)

Student Obligations

  • Conduct research under the designated professor according to an approved plan.

  • Submit semester reports on research progress to the Dean.

  • Comply with university regulations and maintain research ethics.

Eligibility Requirements

Applicants must:

  • Obtain permission from an SSP supervisor prior to application.

  • Hold or be completing a master’s degree equivalent to KUT’s requirements.

  • Be 35 years old or younger at enrollment.

  • Maintain an excellent academic record in bachelor’s and master’s studies.

  • Demonstrate sufficient research skills in the relevant field.

  • Have English proficiency (TOEFL iBT 72 / IELTS 5.5), with some exemptions.

Application Procedure

  1. Select up to two supervisors from the SSP Supervisor List.

  2. Submit a Pre-Application Request via KUT Online Form.

  3. Upon approval, choose one supervisor and submit all required documents by post.

  4. Admission decision follows document review, interview, and specialized examination.

Required Documents

  • Supervisor approval email or official communication.

  • Signed pre-application request.

  • Bachelor’s and master’s transcripts and certificates (English/Japanese, notarized).

  • Master’s thesis or abstract.

  • Research outline (~1 page, English).

  • Two recommendation letters.

  • Health certificate (last 6 months).

  • English proficiency certificate.

  • Optional: rank certificates, publications, passport copy.

Application & Admission Timeline

Additional Notes

  • Monthly stipend may be adjusted if receiving another scholarship.

  • Dissertation results are published online.
