Scholarship Overview
The DAAD NRF Joint Scholarship Programme is a collaborative initiative between the German Academic Exchange Service DAAD and the National Research Foundation NRF It supports full-time Masters and PhD students enrolled at public universities in South Africa focusing on fields with significant relevance to national development
Eligibility Criteria
Be South African citizens or permanent residents
- Be accepted or in the process of being accepted for Masters or PhD studies at a recognized South African higher education institution
- Demonstrate that their field of study aligns with national development needs
- Apply through the NRF Online Submission System applications submitted elsewhere will not be considered
Scholarship Benefits
- Masters Students receive ZAR 80000 per annum for up to two years
- PhD Students receive ZAR 110000 per annum for up to three years
- These funds can be used to cover tuition fees research expenses and living costs depending on the students budget plan and institutional policies
Optional Research Opportunities in Germany
PhD students have the opportunity to enhance their research experience through
- Short-Term Research Stay a 3 to 6 month research visit to a German institution including a monthly stipend health insurance and travel allowance
- Interdisciplinary Summer Schools participation in specialized programs at top German universities
Application Procedure
1 Check the Call for Applications the annual call is published on the NRF website from June
2 Prepare Your Documents update your CV and prepare all supporting documentation according to NRF guidelines
3 Submit Online applications must be submitted via the NRF Connect Online Submissions System nrfconnectnrfacza
4 Institutional Screening applications are screened and validated by the applicants institution before submission to NRF
5 Selection Process a joint panel of university professors and representatives from NRF and DAAD will review applications
6 Notification successful candidates will be informed directly by the NRF
