Overview of the Fellowship
Six flexible start dates are available in 2026: May 1, June 1, July 1, August 1, September 1, and November 1. The fellowship runs for three to six months, though exceptional extensions may be considered. While you may indicate your preferred start date, final placement depends on slot availability at the Center 

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants should be established researchers under age 65 (applicants over 65 may be considered if outstanding), with a proven research record and strong publications. Those currently enrolled in graduate or post‑doctoral programs are not eligible. Experienced librarians may apply for the librarian track. Previous CSEAS fellows must wait at least six years before reapplying 

What the Fellowship Offers

Participants receive an international travel allowance, a monthly stipend for living expenses in Kyoto, research support funds, and domestic travel coverage within Japan (subject to regulations). Fellows are considered employees of Kyoto University during their stay and will be expected to reside in Kyoto, present a public lecture, and engage in CSEAS seminars and publications such as the Southeast Asian Studies journal and Kyoto Review of Southeast Asia 

Important Deadlines

Your complete application must reach CSEAS by August 31, 2025. Candidates will receive notification of selection by the end of November 2025

Prepare a curriculum vitae (up to five pages, highlighting main publications), a research proposal (about two double‑spaced pages, using the official CSEAS form), and two letters of recommendation on institutional letterhead. All documents must be in PDF and submitted through the online form and emailed to the CSEAS awards office at Kyoto University as specified on their official site
