– Maintain a GPA of ≥ 75% or equivalent (e.g., GPA ≥ 3.0/4) 
– Proficiency in English: IELTS ≥ 6.0, TOEFL iBT ≥ 79, or CEFR B2
– For Japanese majors: JLPT N2 level proficiency 
– Currently enrolled in a related field and expected to return to their home country after studies
– In good physical and mental health 

Application Steps

  • Review guidelines on Study in Japan portal for your track.
  • Prepare documents: application form, academic transcripts, research proposal (for graduate), proof of proficiency, health certificate, photo, statement of purpose, and at least two referee letters.
  • Submit all files as PDFs via email to your country’s Japanese Embassy by the deadline (usually May 15, 2025). Ensure total attachments < 10 MB; use multiple emails if needed.
  • Attend exams and interviews in person at the embassy, not online.
  • Wait for embassy recommendation, followed by MEXT’s final selection.
