Details

A fully funded, one-year fellowship at ARL with the opportunity to renew for up to three years, empowering you to pursue independent, cutting-edge research that aligns with ARL’s mission in science and engineering 

Eligibility Criteria

Candidates must have completed all Ph.D. or Sc.D. requirements by October 1, 2025—no later defenses accepted—and be within five years of receiving their degree at the application deadline (July 10, 2025 at 5 PM ET)  Applicants should have demonstrated exceptional scholarly achievements, with significant contributions during doctoral studies . There are no citizenship restrictions, but selected fellows must pass a U.S. Department of Defense security clearance; international candidates may need additional approvals 

Benefits

Receive an annual stipend of $115,000, comprehensive health, dental, and vision insurance, relocation assistance, and a professional travel allowance for conferences and fieldwork . Appointments are renewable annually up to a total of three years, based on performance 

Additional Notes

Compliance with tax reporting is required: U.S. citizens/permanent residents receive a stipend statement in March; non-resident fellows have a 14% withholding rate on stipend and benefits 
International candidates can apply via J‑1, F‑1 OPT, L‑2/J‑2, or permanent resident status; employment-based visas (H‑1B, O‑1, etc.) are not accepted

Visit the National Academies ARL portal at arldpf.nationalacademies.org. Prepare and submit by July 10, 2025, 5 PM ET the following:

• CV detailing scholarly achievements and leadership potential
• Summary of past research (up to 4 pages) and a research proposal (up to 10 pages)
• Redacted Ph.D./Sc.D. transcript following ARL guidelines 
• Four letters of recommendation from nationally recognized scientists, one familiar with your doctoral work
