Accelerate Independent Research Through the Klaus Tschira Boost Fund
Each year up to fifteen outstanding postdoctoral researchers in Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Geosciences, Mathematics, Neurosciences, or Physics receive grants of up to €120,000. Projects may run for 12 to 24 months and offer full flexibility—though no more than €67,000 gross may be allocated toward the fellow’s own salary. Remaining funds can support equipment, assistants, travel, experiments, or any project-related costs
The fund opens its 7th call for applications beginning 2 June 2025, with a firm deadline of 1 October 2025 (23:59 CEST). Successful projects are expected to begin between 1 May and 1 October 2026. All application materials must be submitted via GSO’s online portal
Eligible candidates must be employed at a publicly funded university, university of applied sciences, or a non-university research institute such as Max Planck, Helmholtz, Fraunhofer, Leibniz, DLR, or EMBL in Germany—by the time their project begins. They must hold a doctoral degree but cannot yet have a permanent or tenured position, and they must be conducting non-clinical research in one of the supported disciplines
This Fellowship offers more than just research funds. Fellows participate in a four-part career development workshop series, covering topics like linking purpose to career, effective team management, self-care, and leadership capacity assessment. Personalized coaching from GSO and lifetime membership in the AlumNode network provide ongoing support. Fellows also join an international peer network designed to sustain collaborations and encourage independence across disciplines
Successful applicants are selected through a competitive jury process. Final awardees will be announced once selection interviews conclude, followed by project start planning in spring or summer of 2026. Fifteen fellows will be chosen for the 2025 call, joining a growing community of researchers pushing the boundaries of scientific innovation
