Applicants from any discipline are welcome, provided they hold a doctoral degree and have either published a monograph (for example their dissertation) or at least three peer‑reviewed articles. Your research proposal must meaningfully engage with how images function epistemically—as structures that make complex ideas visible or interpretable. Applications may be submitted in German or English.
Benefits and Support
Fellows receive a competitive salary aligned with Swiss postdoc standards free from teaching duties, along with travel and conference funding, and full access to Basel’s academic infrastructure. You’re expected to reside at the eikones centre in Basel and contribute to select institutional activities.

About the Organisers
The Nomis Foundation is a Swiss philanthropic body that funds high‑risk, high‑impact research across disciplines. Since 2016 it has supported fellowships at the eikones centre, which focuses on the theory and history of the image, exploring visual knowledge across history, art, science, politics, and culture within the University of Basel.
Tips for a Strong Application
Focus on research that interrogates images as models—how they serve didactic, symbolic, evidential, or epistemic functions. Showcase academic excellence via your publication record. Write a clear, innovative project summary and ensure all parts of your single‑PDF submission follow the specified format. Emphasise the originality of your approach and your fit with Basel’s visual studies research community. Prepare to articulate your ideas during potential interviews following shortlist selection.
