 About the CWAJ NJG Scholarship

Established in 1981, the CWAJ Graduate Scholarship for Non-Japanese Women (NJG) aims to empower international female scholars by providing financial assistance and fostering a network of accomplished women researchers. This scholarship is open to PhD students from all disciplines, with no age restrictions, emphasizing the quality and impact of your research.

 Scholarship Details

  • Amount: ¥2.0 million (approximately $13,500 USD)
  • Duration: One year (April 2026 – March 2027)
  • Coverage: Tuition fees, research expenses, and living costs
  • Eligibility: Open to non-Japanese women enrolled in a PhD program at a recognized Japanese university during the scholarship period
  • Application Deadline: Monday, October 6, 2025, 22:00 JST

 Eligibility Criteria

To be considered for the CWAJ NJG Scholarship 2026, applicants must:

  • Identify as a woman
  • Be a non-Japanese national without permanent residency in Japan
  • Be enrolled in a PhD degree program at a Japanese university from April 2026 to March 2027
  • Reside in Japan at the time of application
  • Not have had any education in Japan prior to a bachelor’s degree (excluding short-term language study)
  • Not hold scholarships exceeding ¥1.5 million from other programs during the scholarship period
  • Not have previously received a CWAJ award or be a CWAJ member
