Achieve Doctoral Distinction: UBC Affiliated Fellowships Program 2025/26

About the Fellowship

The Affiliated Fellowships Doctoral Program, administered by UBC’s Graduate School, grants merit-based awards with values ranging from CAD 175 to CAD 40,000, though most successful applicants receive between CAD 16,000–20,000 annually. Top-ranked recipients may also be eligible for the prestigious Izaak Walton Killam Doctoral Scholarship as a top-up

Eligibility Criteria

All applicants must meet the eligibility requirements of the Tri-Agency Canada Graduate Research Scholarships – Doctoral (CGRS‑D) competition, including academic excellence and research potential. International, Canadian, and permanent residents are eligible—anyone applying for a UBC PhD program for September 2025 may qualify.

Preference is given to applicants without other significant funding (defined as CAD 16,000 or higher) for the 2026–2027 academic year. Held positions such as RA/TA or internal department awards may be retained

What You Receive

Successful applicants may receive a fellowship award up to CAD 40,000 per year, with most awards being closer to CAD 16,000. The package may include tuition coverage and in some cases the Killam Doctoral Scholarship, which offers an additional stipend of around CAD 27,500 per year plus a research allowance.

Why It Matters

This fellowship program offers one of the most accessible pathways to finance a world-class doctoral degree in Canada. With flexible eligibility and considerable funding potential, UBC Affiliated Fellowships empower scholars across disciplines to pursue impactful research, with additional opportunities like Killam top-ups enhancing support. Awardees join a vibrant academic community in Vancouver and may leverage networking, professional development, and cross-disciplinary partnerships.

Application Process & Timeline

You do not need to apply separately for Affiliated funding. When you submit your CGRS‑D application (Tri-Agency competition), you are automatically considered for the fellowships. To be eligible for criteria-based awards, you must include relevant award codes in your CGRS‑D application and submit a checklist to your graduate program by the deadline of Tuesday, September 9, 2025 at 12:00 PM PT.
