Programme details

This doctoral programme offers three fully funded PhD positions hosted jointly by leading German institutions including the Max Planck Institute for Sustainable Materials the Max Planck Institute for Coal Research and Ruhr University Bochum

The programme runs for three years in the Rhine Ruhr region of Germany and is conducted entirely in English providing an international research environment with world class facilities

Available research projects

Project one focuses on plasma based metal reduction at Ruhr University Bochum aiming to develop microwave plasma methods as a sustainable alternative to traditional blast furnace technology within the field of physics and plasma science

Project two explores mechanochemical synthesis at the Max Planck Institute for Coal Research using advanced techniques in powder diffraction spectroscopy and in situ analysis within materials science chemistry and solid state physics

Project three involves atomistic simulation of metal oxygen systems at the Max Planck Institute for Sustainable Materials focusing on computational modelling ab initio simulations machine learning and high performance computing within materials science and physics

Eligibility criteria

Applicants must hold a master’s degree in a relevant scientific or engineering field and demonstrate a strong academic background Excellent English language skills are required

Each project has additional specific requirements such as experience in plasma physics for project one knowledge of diffraction or microscopy for project two and expertise in computational modelling and atomistic simulations for project three
