The scheme is part of LJMU Strategy 2030 for Research and Knowledge Exchange and supports up to 20 PhD scholars in 2026. It encourages collaboration with global institutions and aims to foster innovative, high-quality research that contributes to academic and societal advancement.

Funding Coverage

The Vice-Chancellor’s PhD Scholarship provides full tuition fees for full-time students, an annual living stipend of £20,780 starting October 2025, and an annual bench fee of £1,600 to support research and laboratory costs. Part-time students receive tuition and bench fees only; no living stipend is included.

Eligibility Criteria

The scholarships are open to both UK and international applicants. Candidates currently enrolled in a Master’s program must complete their degree before registering for the PhD in August/September 2026. Applicants already enrolled in a PhD or any other Level 8 qualification are not eligible. The program does not support professional doctorates or other non-PhD Level 8 qualifications. Lead supervisors must be permanent academic staff at LJMU holding the position of Lecturer, Senior Lecturer, or above. Postdoctoral researchers and research assistants cannot serve as lead supervisors.

Selection Criteria

Applications are assessed based on the quality of the proposed research, clarity of a Lay Summary written for a non-specialist audience, relevance to the university’s Research and Knowledge Exchange Strategy, and the quality of proposed supervision. Priority is given to exceptional projects with innovative potential.
