FES awards up to 40 scholarships annually to students from Asia, Africa, Latin America, post‑Soviet states, and Eastern or Southeastern Europe. The scholarship supports Bachelor’s, Master’s, Diploma, Magister, state examination, and PhD programmes at German state-recognised universities. Application windows vary: for Master’s programmes the summer semester deadline is 30 May 2025 and for winter semester 30 November 2025, while PhD candidates may apply on a rolling basis. Undergraduate students may apply after their first semester up to three semesters before standard study completion.Eligibility
Applicants must be enrolled or admitted to a German university or university of applied sciences and reside in Germany at the time of application with proof of sufficient German language skills (TestDaF level 4, DSH‑2, or Goethe C1) even if their programme is in English. A strong academic record and active social or political engagement aligned with democratic values are essential. Ideal candidates demonstrate critical thinking, openness, and teamwork. PhD applicants require confirmed admission to a doctoral programme.
Benefits
Students at the Bachelor’s, Diploma or Master’s level receive a stipend of around €750–€850 per month, while PhD scholars may receive up to €1,550/month (from October 2025). Foreign applicants generally receive €992/month. Family allowances (approx. €160/month per child), health insurance coverage, study-related cost support (e.g. books, language courses), access to workshops, seminars, and mentorship are included. Awards are grants and not repayable.
