Research Without Limits in Japan
Since its establishment in 1975 the program has supported more than 450 scholars from different countries and continues to be one of the longest running and most influential research fellowships in the Asia Pacific region
Details
The fellowship is hosted by Kyoto University in Kyoto Japan and allows selected researchers to stay for a period ranging from three to six months
The fellowship period will take place between March and June 2027 with different starting dates available according to the selected research plan
A total of fourteen fellowships will be offered including one position for a librarian researcher
During the fellowship all participants will be officially appointed as researchers at Kyoto University which gives them full access to the university’s academic environment and research facilities
The program supports multidisciplinary studies in several fields including Southeast Asian Studies history political economy environmental and ecological studies cultural and social research area studies and comparative research
Researchers will have the opportunity to focus on their work in a peaceful and supportive setting while collaborating with leading academics and experts
Conditions
Applicants should be international researchers professionals or scholars with a strong academic background and a clear research proposal related to the fields supported by the fellowship
Candidates are expected to demonstrate research experience professional achievements and the ability to contribute to the academic community at Kyoto University
Applicants must be prepared to stay in Japan for the full fellowship period and actively participate in seminars workshops and academic activities during their stay
The final deadline to submit applications is 30 April 2026
