Excel in Research or Art with Switzerland’s Prestigious Excellence Scholarship 2025–26

Scholarship Overview

The programme offers two streams: Research Scholarships for doctoral or postdoctoral researchers across disciplines at Swiss public and federal institutions, and Art Scholarships for emerging artists toward their first mandatory arts master’s degree at accredited Swiss conservatories or universities of the arts. Both streams begin on 1 September 2025 and run for up to one year, with possible extension up to 21 months in the art stream depending on ECTS requirements. The selection is highly competitive and focused on promoting international exchange and scholarly or creative excellence.

Eligibility Criteria

For research applicants you must hold a master’s degree earned before 31 July 2025—or a PhD completed after 31 December 2021 (and before 31 July 2025 in most cases)—and must not have resided in Switzerland for more than a year recently. You also need a formal invitation from a Swiss academic host who will submit your nomination, as self‑application is not permitted. For art candidates you must hold a bachelor’s degree awarded before 31 July 2025, be born after 31 December 1989, and be a citizen of a country eligible for art-stream reciprocity.

Scholarship Benefits

Selected researchers receive a monthly allowance of CHF 3,500 to support living expenses during their stay. Artists receive CHF 1,920 per month, with possible extension up to 21 months based on programme structure. Funding covers only one person and is not a salary. There is no tuition coverage; rather, the stipend ensures you can focus fully on your research or creative training.

How to Apply

Start by identifying your country of origin and consulting the official list of Swiss diplomatic offices responsible for your nationality. Download the application guidelines and full application package, complete all fields, and prepare a strong research proposal or artistic portfolio along with a timeframe. Submission requires two printed copies sent to the Swiss representation in your country before the specified deadline, typically between September and December 2024 depending on nationality. The Federal Commission reviews shortlisted applications centrally, with awards announced by the end of May 2025.
