University of Brighton International Visiting Research Fellowship 2025



The Centre for Design History (CDH) at the University of Brighton is offering a prestigious opportunity for international scholars to engage in interdisciplinary research within the fields of design history and material culture. This fellowship aims to foster global academic collaboration and contribute to the advancement of knowledge in these areas.

Fellowship Overview

The International Visiting Research Fellowship (VRF) provides an external researcher with the opportunity to immerse themselves in CDH’s research culture, collaborate with CDH staff, and contribute to shared research goals related to visual and material culture, design activism, sustainability, and transnational design histories. 


 Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Hold a PhD or equivalent professional research experience.
  • Propose a research project that aligns with one or more of CDH’s thematic areas:
  • Architectural and spatial histories
  • Design activism
  • Fashion, dress, and textile histories
  • Museums, archives, and exhibitions
  • Sustainability in design
  • Transnationalism
  • Secure a CDH academic sponsor before applying
  • Be able to complete all project expenses by 30 June 2026.
  • Scholars from underrepresented backgrounds and regions are encouraged to apply. 

     Fellowship Benefits

    The fellowship offers the following supportUp to £1,000 for travel, accommodation, and research-related expenses.

    • Flexible duration between 1 week and 2 months during the 2025/26 academic year.
    • Start date to be proposed by the applicant (must be after November 2025).
    • CDH academic sponsor and administrative assistance.
    • University email and campus access.
    • Library, computing, and archival resources.
    • Opportunity to present a research seminar.
    • Publication opportunity on the CDH blog.
