The fellowship offers up to six distinct starting periods throughout 2026—beginning on May 1, June 1, July 1, August 1, September 1, or November 1. The exact slot may be adjusted based on availability, ensuring flexible entry points to match your timeline and needs.Eligibility
Qualified candidates are respected, productive scholars or professionals under 65 years old. Individuals older than 65 may still be considered if they demonstrate exceptional merit. This opportunity is not available to those currently enrolled in graduate or postdoctoral programs. A special fellowship slot is available for experienced librarians. Previously awarded fellows must observe a six-year waiting period prior to reapplying.↚
Benefits
Selected individuals will receive a fully funded package including international round-trip airfare, living expenses in Kyoto, research funding, and allocation for domestic travel (subject to regulations). As visiting scholars, they will become part of Kyoto University and can immerse themselves in seminars, workshops, and the vibrant CSEAS academic environment.
