The Confucius Institute Scholarship supports international students across more than 150 Chinese universities. It is available for multiple study levels including short-term language programs, undergraduate programs in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (BTCSOL), master’s programs (MTCSOL), and research or training programs related to Chinese language and culture.

Available subjects focus on Chinese Language, Chinese Culture, Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language, Sinology, Chinese Linguistics, and Cross-Cultural Studies.

Benefits

Recipients of the Confucius Institute Scholarship receive full tuition coverage and free accommodation in university dormitories (shared rooms). Basic medical insurance is provided along with a monthly living allowance of 2,500 RMB for language and BTCSOL students and 3,000 RMB for MTCSOL students. Additional housing subsidies of 700 RMB per month are available for approved off-campus living. In select cases, international airfare to and from China is also included.

Scholarships longer than one year are reviewed annually based on academic performance, ensuring continuous support throughout your studies.

Categories and Duration

Chinese Language and Culture Scholarships are offered for one academic year (11 months), one semester (5 months), and four-week winter or summer short courses. Scholarships for future Chinese language teachers include BTCSOL (Bachelor’s) for 4 academic years, MTCSOL (Master’s) for 2 academic years, and combined programs with one year of Chinese language study plus MTCSOL for a total of 3 years. Programs typically start in September or March.

Eligibility

The Confucius Institute Scholarship is open to international students who are non-Chinese citizens and in good health. Applicants must meet age requirements of 16–35 years (up to 45 for in-service Chinese language teachers), with undergraduate applicants not exceeding 20 years of age. Language proficiency requirements (HSK and HSKK) depend on the chosen program.

Academic requirements include a high school diploma for Chinese language or BTCSOL programs and a bachelor’s degree for MTCSOL programs. Recommendation letters are required: one for language or BTCSOL programs and two for MTCSOL programs. Preference is given to MTCSOL applicants with confirmed teaching employment prospects after graduation. Applicants for short-term programs must not have previously studied in China.
