Fellowship Details

The ERC offers two competitive fellowship categories in 2025:
Starting Grant is designed for early-career researchers who have earned their PhD between January 1, 2018 and December 31, 2022. This grant supports you in building your own team and establishing an independent line of research.
Consolidator Grant targets researchers who obtained their PhD between 7 to 12 years ago and are ready to expand their research team and deepen their scientific impact.
Applicants must conduct their research at a host institution located in a European Union member state or an associated country. All disciplines are eligible under the program.

Eligibility Criteria

You must hold a PhD awarded within the required time window depending on the grant type
You must not have more than one ERC application under review in the same year
Your proposed research must be hosted by an institution in the EU or a Horizon Europe associated country
Scientific excellence is the only evaluation criterion regardless of nationality or field

Fellowship Benefits

Starting Grants provide up to 1.5 million euros for a period of up to five years with the possibility of an additional one million euros for specific costs such as equipment or relocation
Consolidator Grants offer up to 2 million euros plus additional funding when justified
Grants cover 100 percent of eligible direct research costs along with a 25 percent flat rate for indirect costs
