This fully funded doctoral studentship is connected to a UKRI Future Leaders Fellowship project led by Dr Daniel Mulugeta. The research explores how Pan-African ideas are reshaping international discussions about justice, governance, reparations, and institutional reform across Africa, the Caribbean, and global diaspora communities.
Only one scholarship is available, making this one of the most competitive and prestigious doctoral opportunities in the field of Pan-African Studies.
The programme is available at PhD level and welcomes ambitious applicants who can develop original and innovative research connected to the project themes.
Requirements
Applicants from all nationalities are eligible to apply. Candidates should have a strong academic background and a clear research proposal related to one or more of the following areas
Reparations and historical justice linked to slavery and colonialism
Pan-Africanism and global governance
The role of African and Caribbean countries in international institutions
Diaspora politics and transnational networks
Regional cooperation across Africa and the Caribbean
Global inequality and institutional reform
The scholarship strongly encourages interdisciplinary research combining politics, sociology, history, international relations, and related academic fields.
Benefits
The studentship provides full financial support throughout the three year full time doctoral programme.
Successful applicants will receive a complete tuition fee waiver together with an annual living stipend of at least £20,622.
The scholarship also offers valuable teaching experience through the SOAS Teaching Scholarship Scheme, allowing students to strengthen their academic profile while completing their research.
