Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must be international researchers from countries that maintain diplomatic relations with Japan. Candidates should hold a PhD degree or expect to obtain one before the fellowship begins.
For the postdoctoral track, applicants are generally expected to have obtained their PhD within the last six years. They must also secure a Japanese host researcher at a recognized university or research institution before applying.
A strong collaborative research proposal is required, and applicants should demonstrate academic excellence, research experience, and clear potential for international collaboration. Strong publications, previous research achievements, and a well planned project are highly recommended because the fellowship selection process is highly competitive.
Fellowship Benefits
Selected fellows receive generous financial support designed to cover relocation, living, travel, and research related needs during their stay in Japan. The fellowship provides a monthly stipend of ¥362,000, round trip international economy class airfare, a settling in allowance of ¥200,000, and overseas travel and accident insurance.
Fellows may also access research related grants through their host institutions and gain the opportunity to conduct research at leading Japanese universities and institutes. This support allows researchers to focus deeply on their academic work while building valuable professional and international networks.
